CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Nikki answered the door that evening, then nearly col lided with me in the doorway of my bedroom when she came to announce Marco’s arrival. She pushed me back inside the room and shut the door, whispering excitedly, “You didn’t tell me Marco was so male!”
“Shhh! His ego is big enough already.”
“Forget everything I said about Greg Morgan. This is the guy for you, Abby.”
“I have a rule about mixing business and pleasure.”
Nikki huffed in exasperation. “Then hurry up with the business part. And don’t give me your speech about never trusting a male, blah, blah, blah. You have to get over what Pryce did and move on. I’m telling you, do not let this guy get away, Ab.” She paused to scan my black-clad torso. “You’re not seriously going to wear that outfit, are you?”
“This is a stakeout, not a date, and yes, I’m going to wear this.”
Nikki eyed me critically. “Maybe it would work if you tied a mint-green scarf around your neck.”
“Or I could carry a flashing neon sign that says, ‘Hey! Look at me! I’m on a stakeout.’ ” I rolled my eyes and left the bedroom.
“Hey, sunshine.” Marco fired a finger pistol at me from across the living room, then blew on the tip of his finger. “I think your pal Tony is on to something here.”
As he took aim at Nikki, I grabbed his finger and pulled him toward the door. “Come on, ace. You’re firing blanks.”
“Never say that to a guy. Take care, Nikki. Don’t forget what I told you.” Marco pulled the door shut behind me. “Cute girl. Is she still after that doctor?”
“That didn’t pan out. Now it’s a male nurse. What was it you told her?”
“Tea and honey,” he replied, as we clumped down to his car. “She has a scratchy throat and the lozenges weren’t working.”
“She told you all that in the thirty seconds it took to get from the door to the living room?”
“She’s a fast talker. How was your date Saturday night?”
I turned to look at him. “How did you know about my date?”
“You told me.”
“I did?”
“Either that or I heard it in the bar.”
I was appalled at the very thought. “My love life is a subject of discussion in the bar?”
“Everything is subject to discussion in a bar. Got your V8 juice?”
I turned to go back inside.
“There’s some in the car,” he said, catching my arm.
I stared at Marco as he opened the Jeep’s door for me. “You brought Splash for me?”
“Don’t look so shocked.”
“I can’t help it. You’re being so—gentlemanly.”
He gave me a look that said of course he was a gentleman. I decided I’d been keeping points on the wrong guy.
